Who are you? What makes you tick?
I’m a big believer in the three Cs… Cats, coffee, and crochet. Those three things keep my life in balance, which is good because my schedule is chaotic and demanding. I’m a wife and mother to three amazing kids of my own, and a bonus kid who fits in with us so well it’s hard to remember what it was like without him. I love board games, camping, and bush walks, but my heart is at its fullest when all four kids are home for dinner and we get to hang out/catch up on all the goings on. I’m a sucker for chosen family and witty banter, which I try to weave into every book I write. When I’m not spending time with my family or writing books, I’m also the event coordinator for an annual Hamilton-based book event in NZ, called Ages of Pages. 90+ authors come along to sell and sign their books, and meet readers. It’s a ton of fun. Beyond that, I have an extreme weakness for Crème Brûlée which should never under any circumstances be underestimated.
Favourite genre/s to read or write?
As a reader I’m very eclectic. I will read just about anything as long as it has an engaging plot, but I’m not fond of books about war. As a writer, I generally stick to Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, and Paranormal Romance. All of my books include romance. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot, but there is always a ton of other stuff going on in the plot as well.
Please tell us about your latest work:
I’m currently working on book three in my Immortal Trinity series, which is the final book in the set. These books, set in New York City, are about an angel, a demon, and a vampire. (For an idea of the vibe, think TV shows – Lucifer/Supernatural) Allies by necessity and brothers by choice, these three immortals are estranged from their own kind and reluctant to step out of their comfort zones. The path ahead of them involves twists and turns they will never see coming and will challenge the very laws of their species. They will discover whether the friendship they have is stronger than the blood that separates them.
Do you like chocolate fish?
Unfortunately I’m allergic to chocolate!
What’s your main character like?
There are three main characters. Imagine a road trip. The first friend didn’t say they were coming until the very last moment, but wants to control all the details. The second friend really doesn’t want to be there and makes sure everyone knows it. The third is like the annoying little brother who keeps pressing everyone’s buttons. Now imagine the future of humanity depends on these three working together…
- Would you go to the pub with them?
Absolutely. It would be hilariously entertaining. - Would you have them over for dinner?
Hmm… maybe we should eat out. Haha. - What music do they listen to?
They all have their own playlist (for when I’m writing) and all of it is grungier than I would normally listen to. It’s been an eye opener. - What type of car do they drive?
The vampire hates motorized transport, the angel can’t afford his own car, and the demon own several sports cars. - Are they a series character?
Yes. All three characters feature equally in all three books of this series.
What piece of advice would you give a new writer?
Join as many online (or in person) writing groups as you can. Lean on the writing community as you find your way and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Never underestimate the importance of a professional cover, and professional editing. It could make or break your success. Try to write a little every day, even if it isn’t going to end up in the book.
What part of writing do you find the hardest?
The blurb!
Have you ever had lolly cake?
Love it.
Pantser or outliner? And why?
I’m a pantser through and through. I start out with well-defined characters and a few major plot events, and I let the characters take the wheel. I love the thrill of not knowing quite how I’m going to connect the dots as the book comes together.
Do you write in silence? If you don’t write in silence do you prefer music and what type of music?
I always ALWAYS have music playing when I write. Every character who has a voice in my books have their own playlist and no two playlists are the same. While this is great for awakening specific characters when I have several books on the go at once, it can backfire if you hear their songs when out and about – eg: the mall. Then it gets ‘loud’ in my head until I can get some new words on the page.
Do you like to listen to audio books?
No, I get too distracted. I’m a very visual person, so I prefer paperbacks, but will read ebooks now and then as well.
Have you ever visited New Zealand?
I’ve lived here my whole life. I’m from the Bay of Plenty have lived in the Hamilton area for the past 22 years.
Dogs, cats, guinea pigs, or some other type of pet?
I’m 100% a cat person. (They feature a lot in my shifter books). I have two ragdoll cats named Macchiato (brown and white bicolour) and Smudge (blue point).
Where do you write?
When our oldest child moved out of home (earlier this year) we turned his spacious bedroom into a home library. I also have my desk in there. I love being surrounded by the smell of books while I’m writing. Plus, there are some lovely garden views from this room as well!
Johanna M Rae
AUTHOR Johanna Rae is a former fashion designer and married mother of three. She lives with her family, and two adorable ragdoll cats. Balancing family life and her writing schedule doesn’t always leave much time for leisure, but in the quiet moments, Johanna can be found with her nose in a book or crocheting up a storm.
There is a common theme when you read Johanna’s stories. Underdogs and outcasts form a ‘chosen family’ – people with something to prove or overcome, who will stop at nothing to protect their own. You’ll also be knee-deep in suspense, plot twists, witty banter and plenty of humor. Don’t forget the romance… You’re not going to want to miss that! Until then, there is coffee to be had.

I give you a lot of credit for creating whole new worlds. Spec Fic authors like you not only have to tell a good story, but create entire new realities. That’s impressive. All that and a busy family, too – wow! Wishing you much success.
