Magic formula?

I’ve been a bit hopeless at blogging (and also writing) for the last few weeks.
Possibly a few things causing apathy. Sometimes it’s all too much, and to be honest, it feels like a waste of time. As much as I love writing and enjoy the VT Series characters, I’d also like proper sales. That would go a long way to making it feel like a worthwhile pursuit. This year sales are dismal, worst year ever. I don’t know why, I don’t know how to fix it. I have zero idea how to gain visibility without hiring someone and that’s not something I can afford to do (plus there are so many scammers, I can’t trust anyone!) So around and around it goes, going nowhere fast.

We had the [IRL] launch and it wasn’t as well populated as usual so that didn’t help. In fact, a lot of people didn’t know about it despite the amount of posts and whatnot, from the library and me. (Shite like that doesn’t help.)

When I think about what goes into one of my launches and the merch that I have for prizes and whatnot … I do not break even. I do spread the merch over a year though, so by the time the launch day comes around, it doesn’t feel like a lot.
Maybe, I need to stop being so generous and roll everything back to ‘here’s my book and a cake’ that’s all you get?
I stopped giving away books last year.
Perhaps that’s caused this massive decline and slump?
(Although it’s long been known that people who enter contests for free books don’t necessarily buy books.)
That being said I have gathered some awesome fans via contests.
I think I’ve just talked myself into a contest …
If you have ideas that don’t involve spending money – let me know!

  1. I’m in the same situation. Sales are not what I’d like – at all. I keep writing because I love writing and my characters won’t leave me alone unless I do. But it is hard. And I agree with you about publicity. I cannot afford a publicist, and whom do you trust, anyway. Hopefully we’ll get the right magic at some point…
