There was a big shift this week. Doris and I moved into our new house. And it occurred to me that people don’t saying ‘shifting house’ much these day. They move.
Kiwi’s mostly shifted back in the day. I think I like shifting better. Moving sounds like you’ve picked the house up and popped it in a new location. Thankfully, that is NOT what happened. Perish the thought. Perhaps shifting sounds like that as well – just not to me. As a kid we shifted for Superman’s job. We shifted regions not just house. I don’t recall the parental units ever saying ‘we were moving’, we always ‘shifted’.
Anywho, moving on. We are here. We love our house. The cats love their new home. I’ve never seen happier cats. Patrick might even lose weight with all the running and chasing games he and Johnny are playing. They finally have enough room to run and chase. Bonus: no stairs. They have their climbing tower and litter boxes out in the garage – which is attached to the house, and in fact, part of the house.
My desk arrived yesterday. So I am sitting in my office, drinking coffee and writing this post. My view is the front deck and 2 kōwhai and at least 1 totara over by the front fence. It’s pretty awesome sitting in my office. It’s still got a pile of boxes in it but that’s mostly because the bookcase hasn’t arrived yet. April 7th, I think is when that arrives along with our dining chairs. 🙂
I haven’t written a damn thing in the last few weeks because it’s been chaos and not the sort that enables me to vanish into words. A different energy in play, one that had me focused on getting us a house. We saw so many houses. So many. In the end they all blurred into one and I couldn’t remember which was which. Except for this one. Our house.
Although I didn’t remember how long the hallway from the front door was or what colour the tiles in bathroom and kitchen were. I did remember there was an attic and drop down stairs … Doris and her bestie checked no one was hiding in there when we moved in. (Didn’t want Psychobyte playing out.) 🙂
As I write this the cats are playing a game – there is a lot of running and wrestling. When I woke up this morning Dallas was sitting on my headboard, Johnny and Patrick were playing in my room. I guess Dallas was the referee.
But that reminded me I need to unpack some books and put them in the bookcase in my headboard. 🙂
I think I will do that now.
Here’s a pic of the light shades I love so much:

It’s so interesting, Cat! I’ve never heard of ‘shifting house.’ It’s always been ‘moving,’ or ‘moving house.’ There is a certain logic to ‘shifting,’ though. I just find those different uses of language absolutely fascinating. Anyway, I can’t tell you how happy I am that you’re loving your new place. It sounds fabulous. It’s a pain in the arse to move/shift, but once you’re settled, it’s going to be great, and I love it that things are already working out for you.
