I’m filling out subsidy paperwork for Superman. There’s a lot of paperwork. There’s a lot of stuff that I’ve never come across before – it’s a learning curve. Our new normal took a sharp twist late yesterday afternoon.
I had a phone call from the care home. Superman needed to talk to me. Awesome. I love talking to him, always have. I listened to the confused situation he was trying to explain. I got the gist. He was trying to book ferry tickets for his friends in Moetapu and it wasn’t working. I told him I would do it for him. No problem at all. When he asked if I’d spoken to Wonder Woman … that threw me for a second. I explained. That was okay. Back to the ferry tickets. Then, Wonder Woman came back. I had to ring her and tell her what was going on – he insisted. She needed to know. I assured Superman that I would do that right after we finished talking.
Up until then, Wonder Woman hadn’t entered our conversations. ‘The Olds’ did briefly the other day. That was how Superman and Wonder Woman referred to Superman’s parents.
I convinced Superman that he should have a coffee and a nap. He agreed. I was still on the phone when the nurse helped a much calmer Superman into bed. Crisis averted, for now.
The great things is, they know when he gets upset to ring me and once he hears my voice or sees my face, he starts to calm down. I even got him to laugh yesterday.
Anyway, that’s our new normal. And it’s a hard one to navigate. There are other forces at work, making it harder. There are things that don’t make sense and then there are a whole series of things that form a sinister timeline. (I’m not a crime writer for no reason.)
Take care out there!
I’ve got a book to write.

So sorry this is your new normal. It’s got to be hard to navigate. One breath at a time…
Thank you, Margot!
Nothing lasts forever. Things will change again and I’ll discover a whole new normal. Such is life.
