The latest scammy spammy emails arriving in force are “behind the scenes” emails. FFS.
They’re from “digital marketers” and they’re wanting to put together ‘behind the scenes’ videos for authors. I’m not sure what these bots/people think goes on when authors are writing but I am sure that it would make a very boring video.
Writing isn’t a showy occupation. Mostly the magic happens inside our skulls.
Makes me wonder how they’d turn that into a video? 🙂
Let’s imagine how the video would look from the outside, just a typical day …
There’s a lot of staring at screens and out windows. Pacing. A lot of dishes get done and probably more vacuuming than dishes happening.
There’s a fair amount of doodling on anything at hand. All of a sudden there’d be frantic furniture polishing and dusting. Maybe, the author might flit past the open laptop several times before pausing to write a few sentences when something catches their eye. Could be some swearing at the screen and grumbling at whatever the characters think they’re doing.
Depending on the time of day there could be coffee in a mug or tequila in a glass. At some stage everything falls into place and words are written.
Never enough words but words, so, we take the win. It doesn’t matter if we hammer out 10K or 150 words because for whatever reason, it is never enough. (Although 10k leaves you with a mushy brain and 150 gives you more brain to criticise yourself with.)
The process of writing those words looks like this … someone at their keyboard for however long it takes, typing. Of course, no one can see the screen because it’s private. It’s not ready for other eyes.
It’s possible that we do a bit of research depending on what’s happening on the screen in front of us. Sometimes that involves talking to real people and I suppose that could be interesting (although I suspect it’s only of interest to the author because no one else really what the story is about except the author).
There’ll be notes written in a notebook that no one is allowed to see, ever.
Just writing this, I’ve stopped several times to cuddle Johnny Cake (aka Johnny Rotten) and Dallas. I’ve also eaten my breakfast at lunchtime and had a coffee.
Then it was treats for the cats and I poured another coffee.
If you want to know what ‘behind the scenes’ looks like for me … it’s anything but interesting. It’s me standing in front of a MacBook, glancing at the screen every now and then and muttering as I type. (And also doing dishes, vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom … playing with cats.)
Now if you could see inside my head – that would be interesting and quite possibly terrifying.
If you could see inside my head you’d see my stories the way I see them … in video form. That would be cool. Unfortunately that can’t be done, yet.
