Author Interrogations: Kelly Young

Kia ora,
Come in, sit down.
Did you get a coffee or some sort of beverage? You’ve got time. Go make one now then come back.
This author is a new author to me so we’re learning together today.
Let’s get into those questions!

Who are you?
My name is Kelly Young, and I write under that name because as far as names go, I’m not terribly imaginative. By the time I thought it might be a good idea to have a pseudonym, I’d already published books in a series and it didn’t seem to be a good idea to switch.
I’m a retired reporter/swim instructor/coach, because we all know that reporting typically doesn’t pay terribly well. Actually, the coaching didn’t pay at all, but luckily the instructing did. I’m a big sci fi and fantasy fan, and basically an all-around geek.
I’ve been married to the same man for 40 years, and it hasn’t escaped my notice that, had I killed him ages ago, I’d be out of jail by now. Just kidding. Mostly. I’m Canadian, so I may spell things differently now and then. I’ll refer to kilometres for travel but feet for height, pounds for weight and Celsius for temperature. This is the product of being at an impressionable age when Canada switched to the metric system. (Familiar! I’m from the generation that learnt both imperial and metric. A persons height is feet. Babies are pounds. Celsius for temperature. Travel is kilometres. Baking I can translate either way with no problem so it’s however the recipe is written.)

Favourite genre/s to read or write?
I love to read and write cozy and paranormal cozy mysteries, and thrillers. It allows me to safely get out my aggression.
I recently told the young man who married my niece that if he hurt her, I’d put him in a book and give him a grisly demise.

Please tell us about your latest work:
I am currently working on the fifth book in my Travel Writer Cozy Mystery series. The series sees my MC, a retired reporter, travelling around the province and getting embroiled in all sorts of nonsense as she researches her next freelance travel feature. She is also a klutz, and hence mayhem ensues. Each book features a real location, with real tourist information ahead of each chapter.

Do you like chocolate fish?
I have no idea what those are, but I do like chocolate. As long as there’s no coconut in it, I’d give it a try.

What’s your main character like?
As I already stated, she is a klutz, and often trips over clues – literally. She is friendly and loyal, and has a close group of friends. And she has a good sense of humour.

Would you go to the pub with them?
Absolutely! She is often found in local pubs, actually.
Would you have them over for dinner?
I would! She has all sorts of interesting information to share in conversation.
What music do they listen to?
Funny you should ask – many of the books in the series include a playlist. She typically listens to the radio and current hits, but has been known to listen to oldies as well.
What type of car do they drive?
She and her handsome hubby drive an SUV cross-over, because they are both tall and appreciate not having to fold themselves in half to get in and out of the vehicle.
Are they a series character?
As already stated, yes she is. She is the travel writer mentioned in the series title.

What piece of advice would you give a new writer?
Read. Read in your chosen genre and out of it. And don’t edit as you write. I find if you do, you’ll prolong your rough draft by a year or so.

What part of writing do you find the hardest?
Formatting – not technically writing, but as an indie writer, it’s my lot in life.

Have you ever had lolly cake?
Again, I don’t know what that is. But I do love a good cake.

Pantser or outliner? And why?
Pantser – my characters seem to have a will of their own. I might loosely plan, but I like to be surprised by things that pop into my head.

Do you write in silence? If you don’t write in silence do you prefer music and what type of music?
I usually have the radio – current hits – on in the background.

Do you like to listen to audio books?
No. I tried once. I guess I like the sound of my own voice in my head when I read.

Have you ever visited New Zealand?
I HAVE! We visited in 2016, rented a car and drove around the two main islands for a month! I loved the people, and there was so much to see. It was like having the landscapes of the world in one place. We didn’t get to see everything I wanted to see, but it was still amazing! It was a gift from my husband in celebration of my losing 80 lbs, or whatever that is in Kilograms. Canadian, remember? We’re weird about measurements.
We put Canadian driver magnets on the back of the car in hopes of not upsetting too many of the other drivers. (Thank you!) It was the first time I’d driven in a roundabout, and on the opposite side of the road too! Fun!

Dogs, cats, guinea pigs, or some other type of pet?
I love all animals, but we as a couple have only had cats. They are a bit easier to leave behind when travelling. Someday, when we’re done travelling, we might get a dog.

Where do you write?
All over the place, including in bed with a notebook. Or in the living room or Geek study or the dining room table on my laptop. Depends on my mood.

  1. So happy to see Kelly here!! Trust me, readers, you want to read her Travel Writer series. Casey is a great character, and the stories are terrific. And I love the geekiness – I think we all have that side…
