I had someone recently comment with derision because one of characters used a pen and notebook rather than take notes on her phone. Apparently that meant my character was incompetent. Far from it buddy. I can take notes on my phone, I can dictate notes, I can use a pen and paper. I can write on the fucking bathroom wall if I want to. Why different methods?
Because our brains work differently depending on the medium we use. If I’m writing and a scene feels a bit off, I switch to a different medium. If I’m typing I stop and pick up a pen. I very rarely resort to voice notes because I know how my brain works. It works best through my fingers, either a pen or my MacBook.
Why did Ronnie use a pen and notebook in [Foxtrot Foxtrot Sierra]? Because her Nana likes to see notes being taken. The context surrounding the use was there. Right fucking there. Get over yourself and stop drawing incorrect conclusions and maybe read the book.
This morning I was writing, as it’s early days in this new story so I’m not fully immersed in the process yet, and I find I’m switching from pen to MacBook often. Nothing wrong with that at all. It sure as hell doesn’t mean I cannot use technology. It means I do what’s best for the story at the time. And also, what’s best for me or my characters. I carry a notebook. I don’t so much carry my MacBook. I can tell you that I hate typing on my iPad, it really annoys me and doesn’t help the words flow at all.
FYI, very bloody hard for someone to hack your notebook. Analogue rules.
