It’s quite tricky working out what I can and can’t do now and forever more.
The only way to work it out is to try. If there’s pain it’s a no, if there isn’t then a way I go.
So far most things that are every day type things for me are a big fat NO. Or at least a “take a fucking anti-inflammatory” if you really must do that and then we’ll see.
Highly annoying things like not being able to hold my kindle the way I want to at night means I need to prop it up on a pillow, so far I haven’t found the sweet spot there so the thing falls over all the time.
Washing and drying my hair – that’s a hell no unless I take the serious anti-inflammatories. (Lucky it’s a weekly thing not a daily occurrence.)
Writing longhand (I love to write longhand) – limited use. I can maybe write for half an hour.
Anything that requires scrolling (even using the track pad) – yes, but very very carefully and mostly with my left hand.
Washing dishes – NO
Moving the fry pan – NO
Carrying the full washing basket – NO
Pouring anything that weighs more than cotton wool – NO
Mixing, stirring with vigour, (or spreading anything that requires any effort onto my toast) – NO
Polishing furniture – NO
I’m going to go right ahead and say ironing would be a NO.
Making bread – NO
That’s sad because I loved to make pizza dough and pizza. 😦
So I’m guessing scones are a NO.
I’m going to try pikelets. Fingers crossed I can still flip them.
I know, turning vegetables over using tongs is not a fun time.
Typing for longer than half an hour without a break – NO
Carrying anything (more than a cup of coffee) in my right hand – NO
It’s also kinda tricky taking off my left boot.
Cutting pumpkin – NO, NO, NO, NO
Cutting most hard veggies really.
Picking up Patrick – NO. NOPE. NAH. He is far too heavy.
Carrying the vacuum cleaner – NO
I can vacuum but with care.
Cleaning anything that requires scrubbing or firm effort – NO
Even cleaning my teeth is not the best.
I’m hoping that I will settle into this new restricted normal and find things I can do because it’s a little bit annoying but annoying is better than continuing to use my right wrist and risking more damage (not to mention the pain).
So, this is life now.
At least now I know why, when I was making ANZAC biscuits a few weeks ago, it was so painful mixing the ingredients and scooping the mixture to put it on the tray. There is no cartilage.
The book launch on Aug 4th is going to take proper logistical planning. Taxi’s will be ordered. Freda and Doris will need to really step up and do the lifting and carrying of the books and cake, setting up, packing down – the whole thing really. My Knight won’t be back here for the launch so I won’t have my most helpful helper.
I haven’t tried knitting yet. (Mostly because I don’t want to find out I can’t anymore.)
I have trouble using fabric scissors (they are quite heavy) so I don’t imagine I’ll be sewing much from now on, I haven’t really for quite sometime anyway. Don’t have a suitable table to cut on or sew on anymore.
In case you were wondering how I’m doing … now you know. I’m adjusting to the new forever.
Meanwhile, I am hoping that people sign up for my Crime Writing Class at CEC in Wellington for next term. That’s one of the things I can still do, teach.
Also did you get your copy of [WTF] yet?
It’s going to take me longer to write [Foxtrot Mike Lima].
That’s the thing about the new normal, isn’t it, Cat? You can work out a life that will, well, work. You can even do some things you want/need to do. But you can’t live the way you did. Not fun or easy and I don’t envy you. But the alternative would be a lot worse.
It’s a lot of trial and error, but I will find my way around this. Just another challenge to work with! You’re right the alternative is way worse so I shall follow my surgeon’s advice and sooner of later I will find my new normal. 🙂
