I can tell you right now that my favourite state of being is having a finished first draft sitting there looking like a lump of shite, ready to be formed into a fully fledged story. The joy of knowing the hard part is done and the fun is still to come. I love that. I really love that.
Currently, I’m in the midst of first drafts. Yes, drafts.
I’ve got a novella to finish for the ‘Spellbound bookshop’ (Scattered on Cloth) series AND [Indigo Romeo Lima] to write for the Veronica Tracey Spy/PI series.
I’m a lot closer to finishing the novella. 🙂
Anywho, that’s where I am currently. Not finished anything. Still in the painful part of the process. The grey matter heavy part for [IRL], not so much for ‘Scattered on Cloth’. It’s a different genre and doesn’t take anywhere near the cast of characters or depth of plot that [IRL] takes.
If I put my mind to it, I could have ‘Scattered’ finished by the end of the week. All it takes is for me to sit my arse down and write. I don’t have any research I need to do for that story because everything I need I already know, it’s part of who I am.
With the Spellbound Bookshop series I get to tap into things that are familiar and therefore easy for me to bring into a story.
That’s not the case for [IRL], well, not entirely anyway. The characters are people I enjoy and I know rather well (be sad if I didn’t considering they’re my creations), some stuff is familiar and easy, other things take grey matter and research and chats with people who know shit that I don’t know. It’s fun but it’s work. Once this first draft is done, then the real fun begins. Right now, I’m procrastinating like a fucking champ instead of writing.
I could’ve written at least two scenes in the time it’s taken me to write this blog post.
*Shakes head*
I wish I would just get on with it.
Also, I have been sick for week and still don’t have a voice that wants to stick around. Don’t feel too bad now though but you wouldn’t know that if you heard me trying to talk!
I did get to show Superman the new covers for the FBI-Byte Series tonight and he likes them. We both love sunsets and sunrises so he was bound to like them. 🙂

The first draft really is the most work, isn’t it? There’s listening to the characters, working out where the story will go, the whole thing. First drafts always take me longer than editing and revising do (of course, they have their own challenges).
I hope your voice comes back soon!
