Author Interrogations: Denise Fitzpatrick

Welcome!
Pull up a chair and settle in to read all about today’s author. I have had the pleasure of meeting our guest and her books are pretty darn fab!
Are you comfy?
Good.
Let’s jump on in then!

Who are you and what makes you tick?
Denise Fitzpatrick is a born and bred New Zealander who developed a passion for reading and writing whodunits from an early age.Retirement from full-time business writing sparked the birth of Denise’s first novel. And her travels around North America over many years formed the basis for her September series. Books two and three feature the same main characters but are set in her home-town where murder and mayhem abound.
This is where we first meet detective, Ian Anderson. As he only had a small part in the September series he demanded his own series and Denise was happy to oblige. Her love for whodunits has come full circle in the D I Anderson series and the New Zealand settings ensure readers are fully immersed in the action and suspense.

Favourite genre:
Crime fiction is my favourite genre for both reading and writing.

My latest work:
This is a work in progress and a departure from my D.I. Anderson series… I hope my fans will forgive me. However there is a murder to be solved… and in this story my main character is dealing with the fallout from a husband who has bipolar disorder and refuses to take medication.

Do you like chocolate fish:
 Absolutely… bring them on!!

What’s your main character like?
Detective Inspector Ian Anderson is your typical tall, dark and handsome type, and he’s embarrassed at being described as ‘hot’. Women are attracted to him but he’s happily married to Maryanne and does not suffer fools gladly. Ian is a dedicated and hard-working detective.

Would you go to the pub with him?
In a heartbeat!!

Would you have him over for dinner?
I sure would.

What music does he listen to?
Ian is a die-hard Bruce Springsteen fan.

What car does he drive?
A Holden.

Are they a series character?
Yes.

Piece of advice for a new writer?
Find a supportive writer’s group in your area.

Hardest part of writing?
For me it’s always the ending.

Have you ever had lolly cake?
Yes and it’s yum.

Panster or Outliner and why?
I’m a panster through and through. Tried plotting/outlining once and my characters took off on a tangent. Waste of time.

Do you write in silence?
Yes. I shut the door to avoid interruptions.

Do you like to listen to audio books?
No they don’t appeal to me at all.

Pets:
No longer ☹… Chico died in 2022.

Where do I write?
Our third bedroom is now my writer’s cave.

Thanks Denise ☺

  1. OK, I like DI Anderson already. He’s a Springsteen fan, which shows his excellent taste in music. And he sounds like a good guy, too, which always earns points from me. And I love it that you listen to your characters and gave one of them her own story. That same thing happened to me! Wishing you much success.
