Sometimes you need to know the day of the week or time of day. When you’re writing a novel continuity is everything. You can’t have a character cracking on about the moonless night while also dribbling about the brightness of the sun.
You can, but, not all at once. Take a break, let your characters breathe, sleep, eat.
“Whoa, what a dark night.” Character walks into the next room. “Wow, the sun’s really streaming in here.”
You see my point, right? It seems to work perfectly well for DayTime soaps or at least B&B. No one knows the time of day there. It’s dark in one room and light in the other. *Shakes head*
I mostly write novel length works (says the woman with many many many short stories to her name) and I like to know what day it is and have a clue about the time. So, what I tend to do is run through the story (so far) and make a note of the day and the time. Two notes really. One on paper and the other at the top of each chapter. It will not stay there. The time notes get worked into the story. Someone will say something about a shit sleep or whatever, and everyone will know we’re on a new day/time. Although this time around it was pretty tempting to put a time at the top of each chapter. I won’t. I don’t think! No, I won’t. Unless my editor thinks it’s a good idea … then I might. 🙂
Time is a continuity thing. I must admit to being quite delighted with myself late yesterday when I reached a Crockett chapter and he said something about it being 36 hours since … and it was right!
I know! Amazing. Go Brian Brain. 🙂 🙂
If you write, how do you handle time?
Does it bother you?
Do you ignore it and just write?
As a reader, do you like to keep track of days/time in the story?
Anywho, have a good one!

Time lines really do matter, don’t they? I try to keep it straight in my head by asking myself questions like, ‘What just happened?’ ‘What time was that?’ In fact, I have my characters do things at certain times sometimes so that I can keep the timeline right. Even then I have to go back and change things. It’s one of those things that later drafts show you.
Yes!
